FAQ #1

Q – In answer to the question of “will there never be more?” / “are you ‘hanging it up’ for good?”

A - No, I don’t think I’m hanging up the sewing machine for good.  I still have designs in me that I’d like to see come out.  After a little break, I’ll be working on a few kites.  The essence of the 61/49 and Ichiban are the only BMK kites that are moving forward with me.  Those two will likely return in a modified and updated form.  I have a list of stuff in the back of my head as long as my arm, and I hope to get to most of them some day.

My approach will be a little different.  Instead of strictly making kites to order, I’ll be making what strikes me, and hoping it finds a home.  Less “factory” and more “artist of sorts” (as my dear wife says).  I have a couple other things coming up that I hope will pay the bills, so the kites can be mainly a creative outlet again.  I’ll be sending an email to a mailing list every month, listing what’s available before it gets posted on my site.  If you’re interested, you can subscribe to the list in the column to the right of this post. >>>

The road ahead…

As you may know, I’ve decided to close my business, Blue Moon Kites.  This has prompted a relative flood of kind words and good wishes.  Thank you, one and all, for your thoughts.

The closing announcement has also brought a small wave of “just one more” order requests.  I’m sorry, but there will be no more orders, and no more BMK kites.  At some point, you just need to be done, and this is that time for Blue Moon.

I’ve spent the last 20 years either making kites, or making the stuff that goes into them.  It’s hard to see the time before as belonging to the same person that I am now.  Even harder to imagine, is the time ahead, without a little splash of color and grace on the breeze.

What this closing doesn’t necessarily mean is that there will be no kites from me.  If I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s to never say never.  I’d like to continue to build some single line kites, and perhaps push the artistic end a little further than in the past. I still have designs floating around in my head that I’d like to see in the sky some day.  I can’t say what or when, so no point in probing. ;-)   I can say, that if it happens, the where(?) is here.
